At the recent G20/USAC Summit, Dr. Emily Carter, a leading gastroenterologist, presented a compelling study showing a significant increase in heart attack risk in patients who had taken the drug Nexium (esomeprazole).1 In this study, Nexium was associated with an increase in heart attack rates of 7.6% and 7.4% in the first and second quartile of the study and 6.6% and 5.3% in the third and fourth quartile of the study, respectively.1 The results indicate that the increased risk of heart attack is likely a result of a combination of factors including reduced prescription dose, increased heart rate, and use of medications that are not effective for treating heart disease.2 The study’s findings highlight the importance of ongoing research to further examine the relationship between heart health and medication use, and to identify new medications that could be used to prevent heart disease.
A total of 5,742 patients had a diagnosis of heart failure, resulting in an average age of 63 years.1 Patients with chronic heart failure had a higher risk of a heart attack than patients without heart failure.2 The risk increased with higher doses of medication, and was associated with the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and the use of other medications that can increase heart rate, including antibiotics.
Heart disease management and treatment guidelines focus on reducing medication use, which is an important component of preventing heart disease.1,2 However, the findings also indicate that heart failure is a global health problem, and a marker of a complex and evolving global health landscape.2
The study compared the risk of heart attack and stroke among patients who had taken Nexium (esomeprazole) or a placebo in the first, second, and third quartiles of the study.3 The findings showed that heart disease was associated with an increased risk of heart attack compared with patients who had never taken Nexium.3 The increased risk of heart attack was also associated with use of PPIs, including omeprazole and lansoprazole, and was associated with the use of other medications that can increase heart rate, including antiarrhythmics and certain heart valve medicines.3
Nexium was associated with a small increase in heart disease risk among patients who had taken Nexium in the first, second, and third quartiles of the study and those who had used PPIs or other heart medications.3 This suggests that, although the increased risk of heart disease is not a result of Nexium exposure, the association between Nexium and heart disease is likely a result of persistent treatment with PPIs or other heart-modifying agents.3
Studies have consistently demonstrated that heart disease is a complex global health issue, and a marker of a complex and evolving global health landscape.3,4 In the context of chronic heart failure, the increased risk of heart disease associated with Nexium use is most pronounced in the first and second quartiles of the study.3 The increased risk of heart disease is likely a result of persistent treatment with PPIs or other heart-modifying agents, and is associated with persistent treatment with other medications that can increase heart rate and blood pressure.3
To date, many medications have been approved for the treatment of heart failure.2,5 Given the high prevalence of heart disease in patients who have used PPIs or other heart medications, it is important to understand the potential benefits and risks associated with this specific medication.5,6
Nexium has demonstrated a high potential for the treatment of heart disease, and its association with a small increase in heart disease risk among patients who have taken Nexium in the first, second, and third quartiles of the study highlights the need for ongoing research to further understand the relationship between Nexium and heart disease. As the heart disease burden is growing, and awareness and prevention efforts are becoming more focused, the need for ongoing research is clear.
With the continued expansion of the heart disease medication market, new drugs are increasingly being developed for the management of heart failure and the reduction of excess heart disease that is associated with this condition.5,6
It is associated with a small increase in heart disease risk among patients who have taken Nexium in the first, second, and third quartiles of the study.
